Agapia Monastery (The "New Agapia Monastery" or "Agapia from the Valley") - tel. 0040 233 244618, 0040 233 244736
A community of nuns. Patronal Feast: Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (the 8th of November) ; Located in Agapia commune, 12 km south of Tg. Neamţ. From here you can go to Văratec Monastery using an asphalt road (7 km) or an old road over the hill (4 km). It was founded in 1642-1647 by hatman Gavril Coci (Vasile Lupu's brother) and his wife, princess Liliana. Over time it was robbed, set on fire and destroyed , but it was rebuilt and consolidated. This monument of religious architecture has very thick stone walls and its interior was painted by the famous Romanian painter, Nicolae Grigorescu, from 1858 to 1860. The monastery has a library with very ancient books and a museum of medieval religious art. Near by, in the monastic village, one can visit the memorial house of a well-known Romanian writer, Alexandru Vlahuţă.
Agapia Hermitage (The "Old Agapia" or "Agapia from the Hill") ; A community of nuns; Patronal Feast The Transfiguration (the 6th of August); Location: 2 km north of Agapia Monastery. Successively founded from the 14th - 17th century by the hermit Agapie, voivode Petru Rareş and princess Anastasia (Voivode Gheorghe Duca’s wife). It was entirely rebuilt from 1990-1994 using thick fir tree beams, but the steeple is original. From here you can reach Secu and Sihăstria Monasteries on mountain paths.

Almaş MonasteryA community of monks. Patronal Feast: All Saints Sunday (the first Sunday after Great Sunday). Location: Gârcina commune (14 km north of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in 1715 by Ecaterina Cantacuzino, spatharus Iordache Cantacuzino's wife, on the spot of a chapel dating from 1658. It was rebuilt in 1821 by the boyar Lupu Balş and the monk Rufail and renovated and enlarged in 1851 by the boyar Palade. It has 6 guestrooms.

A community of monks. Patronal Feast: Annunciation (the 25th of March). Location:Alexandru cel Bun commune and 12 km west of Piatra Neamţ. It was founded in 16th century by Ştefăniţă Voivode on the spot of an old hermitage. It was entirely rebuilt in 1786

 

 

 

 


Bistriţa Monastery - tel. 0040 233 241091
A community of monks. Patronal Feast: Assumption of the Virgin ( the 15th of August) and The Life-Giving Fountain (the first Friday after Easter). Location: Alexandru cel Bun commune (7 km west of Piatra Neamţ). Successively founded by the Voivodes Alexandru cel Bun (1402), Ştefan cel Mare (1498), Petru Rareş (1546) and Alexandru Lăpuşneanu (1554). Its stone walls are over 1 m thick. The chapel, painted in the fresco technique, is iconographically and artistically remarkable. It posseses a collection of icons and religious objects and, most importantly, a famous miracle-working icon of St. Anna. In the pronaos there are the tombs of the voivodes' families. The monastery is subordinated by 18 hermitages.

A community of nuns; Patronal Feast: Location: Bodeşti commune (30 km north of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in 1988 and it has workrooms for painting, tailoring.

  

Dumbrăvele Monastery
A community of monks. Patronal Feast: Holy Apostoles Peter and Paul ( the 29th of June). Location: Bodeşti commune (23 km north of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in aproximately 1774 by the deacon Teofan. It was completely rebuilt a few years ago.

Monastery from Ceahlău Mountain

A community of monks. Patronal Feast: The Transfiguration (the 6th of August). Location: near the top of Ceahlău Mountain (1770 m alt.). It was founded in 1993 by His Eminence Metropolitan Daniel. It is built of wood.

Durău MonasteryCommunity of nuns. Patronal Feast: Annunciation (the 25th of March). Location: Durău Resort, Ceahlău commune (100 km north-west of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in the 17th century by one of the Voivode Vasile Lupu’s daughters. It was rebuilt in 1835 with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi, through the persevering efforts of Father Ghervasie. It was painted by a famous Romanian painter, Nicolae Tonitza, from 1935-1937. The altar screen was sculptured in gold lime tree and painted at Constantinople. The monastery posseses a large silver miracle-working icon of The Holy Virgin made in the 18th century. Inside the monastery there is the Cultural-Eclesiatical Centre "St. Daniil the Hermit" which has 290 guest beds.

Giurgeni Monastery
Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Nativity of the Birthgiver of God (the 8th of September). Location: The Commune of Valea Ursului (28 km south-est of Roman). Founded in 1738 by the monk Ghedeon on the site of an ancient monastic establishment. It was rebuilt in the 19th century of bricks with very thick walls.

Horaiţa Monastery - tel. 0040 233 246210

Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Holy Theophany of Our Lord Jesus Christ (the 6th of Januarie). Location: The Commune of Crăcăoani (25 km north of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in 1824 by the Archimandrite Irinarh Roset on the site of an old wood church dating the 15th century. In 1867 the Archimandrite Ermoghen Buhuş built a larger church of stone with 8 towers, that gives a remarkably impressive feature to the holy establishment. The monastery posseses a miracle-working icon of The Holy Virgin, manuscripts, very old books and other valubles.
Horăicioara Hermitage - Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Annunciation (The 25th of Mars). It can be reached by climbing 1.5 km through the forest. It was founded in 1446 at the order of the voivode Ştefan cel Mare and then rebuilt in stone in 1868 due to 1867 the Archimandrite Ermoghen Buhuş. The patronal feast became The Healing Spring because 150 m south there is a spring with healing power. The hermitage has about 10 guest beds.

Neamţ Monastery - tel. 0040 233 251580
Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Ascension of The Lord (40 days after Easter). Location: The Commune of Vânători-Neamţ (15 km north-west of Tg. Neamţ). Successively founded from the 14-15th century by the Voivodes Petru Muşat, Alexandru cel Bun and Ştefan cel Mare. It is the oldest and the most important monastic establishment in Moldavia. It includes two churches, two chapels, a belfry with 11 bells, a theological school, a museum of religious art and the room of the old printing press. The monastery posseses also a great library (18000 volumes, some of them very old) and it has an important contribution of the progress of the Romanian medieval culture. Specific for this establishment is the round building in front of the monastery (Aghiasmatar-holy water font) where the holy water is blessed. The monastery has a miracle-working icon of he miracle-working icon of The Holy Virgin, painted in 665 in Israel. Here is the tomb of Ştefan Voivode (Ştefan cel Mare’s oncle). Not far away from the monastery there are many hermitages. There are about 50 guestrooms at “St.Paisie Center” (see Hotels).

Icoana Nouă (The Old Icon) Hermitage

Community of monks. Patronal Feast: The Transfiguration (the 6th of August). Location: Vânători-Neamţ commune (23 km north-west of Târgu Neamţ, 67 km north of Piatra Neamţ and 7 km west of Neamţ Monastery). The church, built of wood, was founded in 1923 by Father Iosif Crăciun on the place where was buried an old miracle-working icon of Mother of God.

Pocrov Hermitage
Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Protection of Mother of God (1st of octombre). Location: Vânători-Neamţ commune (17 km west of Târgu Neamţ and 62 km north of Piatra Neamţ). Built of wood, it was founded in 1714 by Pahomie, Bishop of Roman. It posseses old valuble objects.

St. Ioan Bogoslovul Hermitage
Community of monks. Patronal Feast: St Ioan Bogoslovul (the 30th of April). Location: Vânători-Neamţ commune (17 km north-west of Târgu Neamţ). It was founded in 1402 by the voivode Alexandru cel Bun on the spot of a hermitage from 14th century. It was rebuilt of stone in 1835.

Vovidenia Hermitage

Vovidenia Hermitage Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Presentation of the Mother of God to the Temple (21st of Novembre). Location: Vânători-Neamţ commune (17 km west of Târgu Neamţ, 61 km north of Piatra Neamţ and 2 km south-east of Neamţ Monastery). Built of wood, it was founded in 1751 Ioanichie, bishop of Roman. Rebuilt of bricks in 1857. It has 5 beautiful cupolas and a remarcable painting in interior.

Nechit Monastery Community of monks. Patronal Feast: The Transfiguration (The 6th of August). Location: Borleşti commune (35 km south-west of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in 15th century by Nechit the hermit, then rebuilt in 19th century and again in 1977. It has 2 guestrooms with 20 beds and 25 double guestrooms.

Pângăraţi Monastery - tel. 0040 233 240337
Community of monks. Patronal Feast: St Demetrios (the 26th of October) and Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (8th of November) ; Located in Pângăraţi commune (15 km west of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in 1560 by the voivode Alexandru Lăpuşneanu on the site of an old church dating from the 15th century. This massive building is unique because there are two superposed churches with different entries and different patronal feasts. The monastery includes also a chapel, a bellfry and it is surrounded by a 5 meters high stone wall.There are also very old beautiful icons. Guestrooms with 25 beds.

Peştera (The Cave) Monastery - tel. 0040 233 242342

Mănăstirea Petru Vodă Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (the 8th of November); Located in Poiana Teiului commune (39 km west of Tg. Neamţ and 50 km north of Bicaz). Founded in 1991. Very beautiful landscapes. 200 beds in guestrooms with 3-8 beds. Food for free.



Războieni Monastery - tel. 0040 233 292912
Community of nuns. Patronal Feast: Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (the 8th of November); Located in Războieni commune (26 km north-est of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in 1496 by the voyvode Ştefan cel Mare. The rectangular building, made by stone in a sober style has very thick walls and, also, in the tomb below it, there are the bones of the Moldavian soldiers, who died in the battle from 1476. The bellfry was built in 1862.

Secu Monastery, tel. 0040 233 251862

Community of monks. Patronal Feast: The Beheading of the Saint Prophet John the Baptist (the 29th of August). Located in Vânători-Neamţ commune (17 km south-est of Târgu Neamţ). It was founded in 1642 by Nestor Ureche (princely high official). It was burnt and rebuilt. It has architectural influences from south. The altar screen was sculptured in gold lime tree and the painting dates from 1850. It posseses an important collection of patrimony objects. There are, also, two chapels made by stone in 1610 and in 1823 and Bogoslovul Church (founded in 1832 by the metropolitan Veniamin Costache). 30 guest rooms with about 150-200 beds. Food if it's requested and if the group is not so numeberous.

Secu Monastery

Nifon Hermitage
A community of monks. Patronal Feast: Annunciation (the 25th of March). Located in Vânători-Neamţ commune,19 km west of Târgu Neamţ and 3 km north of Secu Monastery. It was founded in 1664 by Nifon the ermit, it was burnd by turcks in 1831, then rebuilt in 19th century by the priest Nifon Ionescu (the founder of Prodromul Ermitage from Athos), refounded in 1991.

Ţibucani Hermitage
A community of monks. Patronal Feast: St John the Baptiser (the 7th of January). Located in Ţibucani commune, 22 km north-est of Piatra Neamţ and 30 km south-est of Târgu Neamţ. The church made of wood was built in 1764 by Iordache Cantacuzino-Deleanu, the sword bearer. The bell-tower was built in 1859 by Ioniţă Botez, the police prefect.

Sihăstria MonasteryCommunity of monks. Patronal Feast: Nativity of the Birthgiver of God (the 8th of September). Located in Vânători-Neamţ commune (20 km south-est of Târgu Neamţ). It was founded in 1655 by Atanasie the hermit, rebuilt by stone in 1740 by the bishop Ghedeon of Roman/Huşi, rebuilt again in 1824. The altar screen was sculptured in gold lime tree. The painting is unique because of the several styles and themes. The monastery includes also a bellfry built in 1825, a chapel and a new church. Not far away (3,5 km) there is Sihla Hermitage and closed to it you can see the cave where lived the Venerable Theodora. 50 guest rooms with about 100-150 beds.

 

  

Sihăstria Tarcăului Monastery
Community of monks. Patronal Feast: All Saints Sunday ( first Sunday after White Sunday).
Located on Tarcău Valley (15 km south of its confluence with Bistriţa river), between Brateş and Ardeluţa villages in a clearing at the skirt(the forest edge). Built of ash tree, it was founded in 1832 by Father Avramie. The altar screen has real artistic features.

 

 

 

 

Brateş Hermitage - Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Nativity of the Birthgiver of God (the 8th of September). Located in Tarcău commune (15 km south-est of Bicaz and 35 km south-west of Piatra Neamţ; this church made of wood was founded by Father Veniamin Talpău, in 19th century.

Community of monks. Patronal Feast: Nativity of the Birthgiver of God (the 8th of September). Located in Tazlău commune (36 km south of Piatra Neamţ). It was founded in 1497 by the voivode Ştefan cel Mare on the spot of an old wood chapel. This massive stone building was rubbed and distroied severel times.

Văratec Monastery Community of nuns. Patronal Feast: Nativity of the Birthgiver of God (the 8th of September). Location: Agapia commune (12 km south-west of Târgu Neamţ). From here you can reach Agapia Monastery and Sihla and Horăicioara hermitages on mountain paths. It was founded by abbess Olimpiada in 1785, but the present church was built by stone in 1812. The walls are very thick and the roofs of both cupolas have a bell shape, which is a specific feature. The inside painting dates from 19th century in a neo-Byzantine style and the altar screen was sculptured in gold yew tree. There are also St. John the Baptist Church (1844) and next to it the tomb of the poet Veronica Micle, The Transfiguration Church (1847), the bellfry and the St. Nicolas Chapel. Over time it was robbed, set on fire and destroyed , but it was rebuilt and consolidated. This monument of religious architecture has a library with very ancient books and a museum of medieval religious art. Close to the monastic village there are two famous reservations: "The Cooper Wood" and "The Silver Forest".
